Tell us about your journey as a coach.
I grew up in a perfectionistic family and a high-demand religious culture where, at a very young age, I became obsessed with doing things “the right way.” I thought that to be truly worthy of love, I first had to live up to everyone else’s expectations of me. In short, I thought I had to be perfect.
While I was at a religious university getting my degree in music education, I discovered some information that challenged my core beliefs about life and my role in it. As a result, I have spent the last decade deconstructing a lifetime’s worth of labels and harmful beliefs that left me feeling worthless, small, and never good enough.
As a music teacher, my favorite part of the job was creating a safe space for my students to, as Miss Frizzle puts it, “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.” This philosophy, along with a brief foray into the world of art creating “bad portraits” for people, is what informed the creation of my podcast “Just Be Your Bad Self.” It has evolved into a forum where I decry perfectionism, deconstruct cultural conditioning, and protest that everyone is worthy of love, just the way they are.
In 2022, I began partnering with licensed therapists to host empowering women’s retreats such as “Reclaiming Female Sexuality” and “Tap Into Your Magic.” I saw the life-changing results these retreats had on those who attended and decided to offer this kind of transformation on a more consistent basis. As a result, I now offer private and small group coaching in addition to my podcast and quarterly retreats.
I feel passionate about helping women discover their authentic selves, become the authority in their own life, reclaim their worth, find community, and move confidently forward in a way that feels aligned with who they really are.
What courses, programs, or certifications have you done? Would you recommend them, and for whom?
I am a course junkie! My favorite program to date is the one I went through with Linda Basso where she helped me hone in on my message, set up a stellar website, develop a marketing plan, and start making discovery calls. Most importantly, she helped me break through a lot of my limiting thoughts.
What advice or perspective might you give a new coach trying to get their first clients? Any advice they should ignore?
Be willing to set boundaries on WHO you will take. It makes you more desirable as a coach when you don’t accept just anyone into your program.
Also, don’t be afraid to set your price point a little higher than feels comfortable—you’ll grow into it.
What are your thoughts on “choosing a niche” as a coach?
I think if niching down is holding you back from serving people, forget about it until it comes naturally. Just offer what you are good at and passionate about and be curious about who is naturally attracted to you already (that’s probably your niche).
What books have significantly influenced your life? What are your key takeaways from these books?
Untamed by Glennon Doyle probably tops the chart. It’s the first book that gave me permission to live my life differently than the way that I was taught I “should.”
If you received an extra $10,000 to spend on your business, how would you spend it and why?
I would put it toward simplifying my systems! Any programs or people I can hire to take things off my plate that aren’t in my zone of genius (scheduling, posting, managing emails, website, etc.) let me spend more of my time doing what I am good at and what I love!
What are some of your favorite affirmations or mantras currently? Why?
“Tension is who you think you are supposed to be. Relaxation is who you are.”
It just reminds me that I don’t always have to be trying so hard and that most of the time, letting things flow and feel easy is the most effective course of action.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or have lost your focus or motivation?
Give up! Not forever, but maybe for an hour, a day, or a week. I try to listen to signs that it is time to slow down and make space in my schedule for breaks and fun.
Do you have any examples of how a “failure” set you up for later success?
Sometimes I feel like my whole life is just a series of failures that I learn from and then fail better the next time. I have “failed” so often that, honestly, I don’t even think of it that way anymore. Doing things the messy way and not controlling outcomes is just part of the learning process.
Tell us about a time when putting yourself out there really paid off.
Starting my podcast is one of the scariest things I have ever done. I did it as a homework assignment from a program I was in and decided just to do it messy.
I was terrified and felt awkward….and I could never have imagined the impact it would have on people in my community.
I’ve stuck with it, and it always surprises me when a stranger will come up to me at the grocery store or in a coffee shop and say, “I listen to your podcast and it has meant so much to me! “
If you could put a message on a huge billboard—getting a message out to millions—what would it say and why?
“Just Be Your Bad Self!!!”
Because bad is just a label given to you by someone else whose opinion doesn’t matter, and you are worthy of love just the way you are!
