Shad Morgheim – Leadership & Lifestyle Coach

Last updated on March 2, 2023

Shad Morgheim began his coaching practice after a break with the corporate world. Below, hear how he turned disappointment into a path toward greater authenticity and fulfillment by pursuing a career helping others.

Coaching Focus: I am a Leadership and Lifestyle coach. My focus is both professional and personal. I focus on helping leaders lead by intuition and teaching people to live their passion, peeling away self-limiting beliefs. We do this by intentionally focusing on being 1% better every day, guided by the conviction that small steps each day with intentional goals are the key to sustainable success.

Location: Based in Nashville, USA, with clients nationwide

Connect: You can find Shad online at his website, as well as on Instagram and Facebook.

Tell us about your journey as a coach.

I am a Physical Therapist by training and have been a healthcare leader for the last 20 years.

My leadership style has always been about the person I lead rather than the metrics we are aiming to obtain. Focusing on the individual, their talents, their needs, and their goals has always led to consistent results.

I didn’t fully realize so many years ago that my leadership approach was more coaching-focused than traditional management. This really came to light in 2015 when I was President of one of the largest Home Healthcare companies in the US, and the Board of Directors decided it was time for a change in leadership. To my amazement, that forced change turned out to be the greatest blessing of my life.

During my tenure in leadership, I had become less and less genuine as a leader and had become more of a micro-manager. I was actually miserable and possibly at my unhappiest, but living in that world every day, I didn’t fully realize the extent of my misery.

Shortly after my separation from my leadership role, a friend mentioned that I was a natural coach and should explore this option. Diving deeper, I realized my passion is making a difference in a person’s life (hence my choice to pursue healthcare). Coaching was a natural fit.

Watching a person grow into their full potential is a miracle in real-time; watching it unfold 1% at a time is like watching a miracle in slow motion.

There is absolutely nothing more satisfying in the world than helping someone unpack their limitations and find greater success, personal joy, and deeper passion.

Watching a person grow into their full potential is a miracle in real-time; watching it unfold 1% at a time is like watching a miracle in slow motion—something that is to be cherished and celebrated!

What courses, programs, or certifications have you done? Would you recommend them, and for whom?

I graduated from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) in 2017. After researching several programs, iPEC really resonated with me. Their program really focuses on energy leadership and the impact of mindset as well as positive and negative energy.

For anyone looking to begin a coaching career or expand their education and certification, I would encourage them to find what fits their style and their beliefs, and to trust their intuition.

I am an active member of the International Coach Federation and currently finalizing my Associated Certified Coach credential (ACC).

If you received an extra $10,000 to spend on your business, how would you spend it and why?

A little on marketing, but primarily to fund a higher and higher level of coaching for myself. The greatest impact I have had in my business is when I continue to expand my coaching knowledge and work with a variety of coaches.

My goal would be to hire Marshall Goldsmith as a coach, since I absolutely resonate with his style and coaching philosophy. Learning and growing from such a respected leader in the industry would only help me serve my clients at a higher potential.

What are some of your favorite affirmations or mantras currently? Why?

My daily morning mantra is “I expand in abundance, influence, success, wealth, and joy every day, and I inspire those around me to do the same.”

For me this is incredibly powerful for 3 reasons:

  1. It reminds me that my success, joy, and goals are actions that I need to take; they will not come without intention.
  2. It affirms that I will expand every day, focusing on that 1%. Even if it is only 1%, I have succeeded.
  3. My actions should inspire others to do the same, so am I doing the anabolic activity I need to in order to inspire others.

I write this every morning (okay, most mornings, 🙂 ). As I write it, I speak it and read it.

I firmly believe that multi-sensorial input mitigates the catabolic/limiting thoughts. So writing it, reading it, and speaking it aloud internalizes this for me and sets my day in alignment with my intentions.

When you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or have lost your focus or motivation, what do you do?

When I am stressed, meditation and exercise are always the two key things lacking. Intensive exercise allows my brain to shut off. The push of an intensive exercise workout reminds me we are all capable of so much more than we believe. It provides me with the affirmation that I can accomplish my goals, no matter how difficult. I am sure the endorphin rush doesn’t hurt either!

Meditation, especially focusing on my third eye (I love Chakra work), allows me to reset and listen to my intuition. Meditation allows me to let the universe unfold without me trying to control it. I simply work within it for the path that has already been set for me.

Do you have any examples of how a “failure” set you up for later success?

As I stated, in 2015, I was asked to step aside from a high-level executive position. At the time I felt like a complete failure, like I didn’t do what was expected by the organization.

What I realize now is that that position, with all its status and benefits, was not where I was supposed to be; it wasn’t the unique me.

As you can see from my photos, I have a passion for tattoos, something usually frowned upon in the upper-level corporate world (although with less stigma now than in the past). When I was in the corporate world I hid my tattoos—not just covered them for professional reasons, but hid them as if they were an alternate ego. This “hiding” also kept me from being authentic in my interactions.

What I realized is that this organization didn’t value the unique me, and I was better served to find a career wherein I could work with organizations that valued my skills, beliefs, and actions.

I realized that rather than viewing it as a failure, I was simply on the wrong path. I now believe and teach my clients all the time that you set out on a path and you either succeed or “you learn”—as long as we try, we do not fail. We adjust from what we learned, focus on being authentic in our interactions and intentions, and position ourselves for success… again even if it is just 1% at a time.

If you could put a message on a huge billboard—getting a message out to millions—what would it say and why?

Be you, do you, for you! You are a unique gift to the world, anything less than the unique you is to give less to the world.
