Tell us about your journey as a coach.
My career started in the investment industry as a financial advisor; I excelled at building a business and began to coach others in building their business. I quickly learned that the joy I felt in helping others overcome hurdles and tap into their full potential was my calling.
In 2003 I co-founded an investment firm and took on the responsibility of coaching brokers to build 7-figure books of business. At that time, I was more of a performance coach. Through my own life experiences, I learned that there was more to life than crossing the finish line first; you couldn’t live your best life on performance alone.
The realization that there was more to life sent me on a personal journey to create meaningful success and a life I truly loved. I began learning, testing, and reverse engineering the challenges people face when trying to live their best life. I set out a process to deprogram what wasn’t serving me and created a mindset practice that would allow me to know myself and create the life I wanted every day. I brought these same teachings to my clients, and the success we experienced was far beyond any gritty performance practice.
My coaching created great results, filling my one-on-one coaching practice by word of mouth. To help more people, I started offering group programs that also began to sell out, which inspired me to write my soon-to-be-released book Start With You.
What courses, programs, or certifications have you done?
I am registered and certified through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). I currently hold a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential and will be applying for my Master Certified Coach (MCC) in July.
What advice or perspective might you give to a new coach trying to get her first clients? Any advice they should ignore?
Focus on doing what you love and not the dollars. Don’t be afraid to coach for free in the beginning to build up word of mouth around your coaching and gain confidence in your abilities. Offer a free session to someone who can have a big impact on your business. Do not get stuck trying to perfect marketing, websites, or giveaways. When it comes to coaching you are the only marketing that is going to bring in a client.
What are your thoughts on “choosing a niche” as a coach?
Working from a niche is extremely helpful, but you don’t need a niche to start. Some people know right away because they come from a relatable space and want to impact others through their own journey. Other coaches may not have the specific area, yet they simply know they want to make an impact.
Sitting and thinking about it won’t ultimately provide you with the niche you land on. If you don’t have a niche that is pulling on your heart, I recommend staying broad and starting coaching people; you will find what you love to work with and what you are great at through your clients. Your clients will lead you to your niche.
What are some of your favorite affirmations, mantras, thoughts, and/or journal prompts currently? Why?
I created the Morning Mindset journal, which I use daily. It allows me to be self-aware, create the day I want, shift my mindset, and start my day proactively.
“Things aren’t happening to you; they are happening for you.” This mantra shifts the mind from a victim mentality into gratitude. When we are in a place of gratitude, we see opportunities instead of obstacles.
“I choose my thoughts” is a daily affirmation that reminds me that we are in control of our minds; we don’t have to believe what the mind thinks; we can choose the thoughts to feed it.
When you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or have lost your focus or motivation, what do you do?
Whenever I feel unmotivated, I return to my values to ensure they are being met daily. Our values fill us up and motivate us; if we aren’t getting them in, our minds have a way of letting us know.
Whenever I am overwhelmed, I do a brain dump and write answers to these three questions:
- What’s on my plate that’s overwhelming me?
- Looking at the list I made, I ask myself what is in my control and what I need to let go of.
- Lastly, I order the remaining items in order of priority.
If you could put a message on a huge billboard—getting a message out to millions—what would it say and why?
We are the creator of our life and success, yet people constantly ignore themselves and tend to others’ needs, thoughts, and opinions. The mentality of putting themselves last leads to burnout, lack of self-worth, and lack of authenticity and trust. If we started with ourselves, we would take care of ourselves, honor our commitments, and look to ourselves for our worth and trust ourselves.
