Tell us about your coaching journey.
Coming from a dysfunctional family, a physically abusive relationship and a betrayal of a friend which left me almost bankrupt, I found myself searching for real meaning and purpose of my life after hitting rock bottom and almost committing suicide then. #bestmeever became my personal hashtag which I used then to post the learnings I got along the way as my means to cope and start all over again.
As my posts gained following and later led to becoming a book compilation, I figured out I was meant to do something outside of marketing and advertising: I wanted to change lives much like how Oprah, Tony Robbins and Ellen DeGeneres did it. And I found out they had life coaches or were considered as one then. I knew right then and there that I was meant to be one. And looking back, it was the best decision I made.
Through the years, I worked with a number of celebrities, top executives and highly successful people globally under my #bestmeever program. I am very lucky that I get a lot of media opportunities across different platforms as a subject matter expert in coaching and with my 5 books becoming certified best sellers, I get to enjoy client referrals from existing clients and a bunch of my readers, viewers and followers get me as their personal coach.
It also helps that a lot of people have seen my videos on TED.com, read my thought leadership articles in the International Coaching Federation (where I am a Certified Professional Coach) and People In Asia (as a columnist) and have seen me in the numerous brand collaborations I have done across the globe. Credibility and integrity and consistent desired results in practice have paved way for me to thrive in my chosen space.
Today, I have expanded my coaching programs and have transitioned from face to face sessions to highly customer friendly virtual experiences to accommodate the changing times. I have also started on building my own coaching school, to help aspiring coaches get their desired results beyond the usual certification processes.
For me, I can say, moving on and forward in my practice as a coach is now all about expansion and growth.
What advice or perspective might you give to a new coach trying to get her first clients? Any advice they should ignore?
Come from a space of authenticity and honesty. Coaching is one practice where you cannot apply the “fake it till you make it” concept because your client’s life and goals are at stake. So be humble enough to assess your current skills, be patient in learning new ones and upgrading your present skill sets with consistent practice and get valuable feedback from a trusted coach mentor you can invest on. Be willing to pay premium for quality if you feel that person is worth it because that shows how much value you want to put in yourself and your practice.
The other question made me think about one of my favorite quotes: when setting out on a journey, never seek advice from someone who has never left home. So make sure you ask those who have achieved what you want, those who managed to overcome your concerns at present or have been in similar situations that can give you valuable insights.
If you received an extra $10,000 to spend on your business, how would you spend it and why?
I would use it in putting up a scholarship fund for other aspiring coaches from the less fortunate communities and far flung areas to be able to give them access to quality coaching services. I have always envisioned a world where everyone is empowered truly from within so everyone can be accountable for his/her actions.
When you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or have lost your focus or motivation, what do you do?
I take a step back, breathe and ground myself. I move away from my triggers and take a walk, enjoy my surrounding and count my blessings. I try to reflect as I intentionally look for the silver lining in the situation. After which, I mindfully recall my own purpose and anchor myself on that before facing the situation on hand once more, but this time with a fresh perspective on hand.
Oh, having iced coffee also helps a lot, in my case. Haha!
If you could put a message on a huge billboard (metaphorically, getting a message out to millions or billions), what would it be, and why?
You don’t need to wait for someone else’s permission to allow yourself to be happy and live the life you want.
You just have to say YES to yourself and to your own happiness and growth. Most of the time, we forget that we don’t need the validation of others to choose the life that we truly want and need for ourselves. After all, we know what’s best for us.
For as long as we are willing to take responsibility for ourselves and we know genuinely what we truly desire, the opinions of others shouldn’t matter. Remember, each one of us just matters as much so why treat ourselves less? We are all worthy and deserving of whatever we desire to begin with.
